Sorority History

Illustrious Founders

In 1922, Indianapolis was at the height of a second rise of the Klu Klux Klan when an Indiana Chapter of the Klan was founded. Through great courage, and out of responsibility to womankind, seven school teachers bonded together as a sisterhood. These illustrious women founded a sorority that would promote education and service at a time when there was neither hope nor freedom for such independent and motivated women. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana and the group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha Chapter at Butler University.
